Packaging is often an underappreciated part of the snacking experience. For many years, the usual packaging for most popular snacks was non-recyclable. However, this is changing.

Environmental issues are on the agenda across Europe. And environmental activists are increasingly pressing for a global response to the rising wave of waste disposal, which is attracting media attention to waste and is eroding consumer, industrial and political thinking. Today, most packaging structures for snacks can be recycled, and in several European countries, including Germany and Austria, have established recycling systems. But many other countries, including Britain, do not. Consumers are increasingly aware of what will happen when snack packaging be handled by them, and brands and retailers are stepping up to take action.

For example,in the UK retail sector, Tesco recently started a "closed loop" trial recycling partnership with Recycling Technologies, allowing shoppers to return all plastic packaging to Tesco stores. Under the trial, shopping pouches, pet food packaging pouches, crisp packaging, and other packaging materials are turned into Plaxx, which are then used to make new plastics.

Over time, consumers' love of snacks will remain constant. And coupled with a high awareness of the importance of recycling, which giving packaging a "second life", brands and retailers will provide more environmentally friendly packaging to meet the needs of the planet, consumers and businesses.
